Faults we fix

Common fridge problems

What you notice, what usually causes it, and what we do about it.

Common fridge faults, their likely causes and what we do
What you noticeLikely causeWhat we do
Not cooling, but the light worksA gas leak, a failed start relay or a weak compressor. We test the compressor and system pressure first, and seal any leak before refilling.
Freezer cold, fridge section warmA blocked air duct or a failed defrost heater on no-frost models. We clear the ice, then test the heater, sensor and timer and replace the part that failed.
Ice building up at the backA defrost fault, or a door seal letting warm air in.Defrost system and door seal checks, with the faulty part replaced.
Water inside or on the floorA blocked defrost drain or a cracked drip tray.We clear and flush the drain line, and replace the tray if it is cracked.
Buzzing, clicking or rattlingA fan blade hitting ice, a worn fan motor, or a compressor struggling to start. We trace the noise and fix the cause, not just the sound.
Trips the power or will not switch onA shorted compressor, damaged wiring, or a control board hit by a power surge.Insulation and board tests, and advice on a voltage guard.
Fridge runs but food is warmDoor seal leaking, thermostat set too high, or condenser coils blocked with dust.We check the seal, reset the thermostat and clean the coils, then test the temperature.
Freezer soft or not freezingLow gas, a failing compressor, or a door left open against the seal.Gas pressure and compressor tests before any refill, so we only fill what is actually lost.
Light on inside is offA blown bulb, a faulty door switch, or a loose lamp holder.Switch and holder tested; bulb or switch replaced.
Shelves or drawers blocked by iceFrost on the fins from a defrost fault, or a meltwater tray that is not draining.Full defrost cycle checked, drain cleared, and the frost removed safely.
Freezer punctured while defrostingA knife or sharp tool pierced the evaporator while chipping ice, and the gas escaped. We seal the hole, pull a vacuum to clear moisture, then recharge with the right gas, R600a or R134a.
Door will not close properlyA torn gasket, a sagging hinge, or the fridge standing off level.New door seal fitted, hinges adjusted and the fridge levelled.

Servicing

Fridge maintenance

A fridge runs day and night. A service keeps it cooling properly and stops the compressor working harder than it needs to.

  • Clean the condenser coils and compressor area
  • Check door seals for gaps and tears
  • Clear and flush the defrost drain
  • Check the thermostat and temperature settings
  • Test the start relay and fan motors
  • Check the cable, plug and voltage guard

How often: Once a year at home. Every 3 to 6 months for shops, restaurants and display fridges.

Before you call: quick checks

  1. Try the socket with another appliance to rule out the power.

  2. Leave at least 5 cm of space behind and above the fridge for air.

  3. If it was just moved, keep it upright and switched off for 4 hours before judging it.

  4. Keep the door shut while you wait. Food stays cold longer.

  5. Clean the dust from the back or underneath every few months. It is the easiest way to keep the compressor working well.

Questions

Fridge repair questions

Not answered here? Ask us on WhatsApp or call. A person replies, any hour. WhatsAppCall
Do you refill fridge gas?

Yes, but only after we have found and sealed the leak. Refilling a leaking fridge means paying again within weeks. We use the gas your fridge was built for, such as R600a or R134a.

Can you repair inverter fridges?

Yes. An inverter compressor is driven by a control board, so we test the board and the compressor separately before replacing anything.

Do you repair chest freezers and display fridges?

Yes, for homes, shops, butcheries and restaurants across Nairobi and Kiambu.

How do I know if my fridge needs gas?

Gas is not used up on its own. A fridge that is low on gas has a leak, so we find and seal it first. A refill without a leak fix is a waste of money.

How long does a fridge repair take?

Most faults are fixed in one visit: a relay, thermostat, fan or seal takes one to two hours. Compressors and boards can need a part ordered, and we tell you before we do that.

Should I switch the fridge off when it is being repaired?

Yes, unplug it while we work on it, unless the technician needs it running to test the fault. Keep the door shut so the food stays cold.

Which types of fridge do you repair?

Single-door and double-door fridges, side-by-side and French-door models, inverter fridges, chest and upright freezers, wine coolers, and display fridges for shops and restaurants.

Is it worth repairing an old fridge?

Usually. A relay, thermostat, seal or fan costs far less than a new fridge. If the compressor fails on an older fridge, we will tell you honestly whether replacing it makes more sense.
